History and tradition
Although olive oil production in Menorca has never been abundant, the remains of an oil mill from Roman times have been found in Alaior, in addition to other evidence that helps prove the existence of olive oil production throughout history, primarily for self-consumption, with quality that warranted mention by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria in his great work Die Balearen (1890).
From the early 20th century, the land area used for olive tree farming has gradually increased until reaching 51 ha today.
